Sigils for Self-Love

I have at least 4 books on Witchcraft that I pulled out to write this article in hopes to do research offline and from a reputable source but not a one has any info on the magick of sigils or creating sigils. When I type in sigil into google the first source is Wikipedia quickly followed by Pinterest, Tik-tok, and Instagram. All of this seems to add to the mystery and appeal of Sigils to me. I was hoping to find some history and perspective from a seasoned witch on how sigil’s work, their purpose, and uses but it seems, as it is with many occult practices, The Sigil is wanting to make me work for understanding, making it that much more appealing and exciting to me.

Sigil making is associated with a type of witchcraft called “Chaos Magick,” a post-modern witchcraft that includes many different ideologies, practices, and symbolism. In his book(that I found on kindle), Kyle Meek defines Sigils as: “written statements of intent that are stylized into symbols often representing obscure and complex aspects of being or carefully crafted intentions or desire that an occultist wishes to evoke or manifest.” He goes onto explain that a sigil is a way of communicating with the subconscious mind.

Our subconscious which rules 85-90% of our mind has a photographic memory but does not communicate with our conscious mind well. It’s murky. The conscious speaks in words, thoughts, and analysis. The subconscious thinks in symbols and feelings. So when we have a desire or change we want to implement it’s important to not only think of it consciously but also to communicate it to our subconscious. Creating a symbol like a sigil is one way to do this work. Think of this as a positive affirmation but as a unique drawing created by you!

How to create your own Sigil:

Step 1: Write out your affirmation on a piece of paper(write in present tense, like it has already happened with no negatives-we are speaking to our subconscious so we don’t want to program anything negative into our minds)

Step 2: Cross out all repeating letters

Step 3: You will end up with a list of random letters

Step 4: Write out 1-9 on your paper then below it right out the alphabet

Step 5: Take the letters from your list of random letters and correlate them to the numbers(Here you will have just a list of numbers) Cross out any repeated numbers

Step 6: Draw numbers 1-9 in a circle(like a clockface except with only numbers 1-9)

Step 7: Following the numbers you have written out connect lines from each number creating a shape

And that’s your own Sigil!

Below is a picture of my process of creating a sigil and here is a link from @chaoticwitchaunt on tiktok who explains it really well.

What to do with your sigil:

I have read that some people create their sigil and burn it or throw it away to never see it again. But from my personal research with the subconscious, repetition is important.

Here are some ways I recommend to use your sigil but use your own intuition:

-Put it on a post it note and put it somewhere you see it every day.

-Write it out every morning and meditate for 5 minutes while staring at it

-Write it out every evening and meditate for 5 minutes while staring at it

-Create a piece of art using your sigil

-Inscribe it onto a candle and on a new moon, light the candle daily until it burns out

This practice is great for anyone wanting to build a better relationship with self or add another ritual to their spirituality tool-kit. Not to mention, I have a lot of fun creating sigils.

Enjoy!
